Comprehensive treatment of back & neck pain

Neurological Conditions | Arthritic Pain | Back & Neck Pain | Knee & Shoulder Pain

Studies show that early, aggressive treatment of back and neck problems results in speedier relief of pain. Relieving pain as soon as possible is critical because other studies suggest that, if permitted to continue unabated, pain can instigate deleterious changes in posture, gait and weight bearing, which can, in turn, worsen the original problem or cause new ones.

Sources of pain

The spine and neck represent a cohesive, united assemblage of neurologically mediated joints – each one complexly articulated and distinct yet interdependent. When functioning properly, these joints permit motion and stabilization by working in tandem with paraspinal muscles extending from the occipital bone to the lumbar region.

At some point in their life, most adults will experience a pain-generating malfunction of one or more components of the neck or spine due to osteoarthritis, muscle weakness, disc herniation, sprain, spasm, whiplash, or other causes.

These malfunctions often are treatable with a combination of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions – including injection therapy, analgesia management and intensive physical therapy (the latter consisting in part of soft-tissue and joint mobilization, strength and flexibility conditioning exercises, trunk stabilization work, TENS, therapeutic massage and applications of heat, cold, ultrasound and electrical stimulation modalities).

The April 2007 issue of American Family Physician reports the findings of a study that confirm the efficacy of the aforementioned interventions for treatment of back pain. Specifically, it lauds the use of physical therapy that employs a standardized, algorithm-based approach to both the assessment and treatment of low back pain and/or sciatica.

Comprehensive approach is essential

Combining pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic management of back and neck pain represents a comprehensive approach to care. Comprehensiveness is essential to the treatment of neck and back pain because of the complex biomechanics of affected joints, muscles, and related anatomic structures.
